History and Origin

History of Christmas:
It started almost 2,000 years ago that the birth of baby Jesus is celebrated world over as the Christmas Day. However, this day is filled with controversies, myths and compromises. The date December 25th comes from Rome and was a celebration of the Italic God, Saturn, and the rebirth of the Sun God, 'Mithra'. This day was celebrated even before the birth of Jesus Christ. This winter holiday was celebrated with gifts, customs, feasting et al.

Variations of this pagan holiday continued for the first few centuries even after the birth of Jesus Christ. Tentatively around 336 AD Emperor Constantine officially converted this pagan tradition into the "Christian" holiday of Christmas. Hence, it became the time when the professing Christians were supposed to focus on Jesus Christ to celebrate the day.

Derivation of The Word Christmas:
As far as the origin of the word is concerned, it's from the compound word "Christ's Mass". "Cristes" originated from Greek Christos and "masse" is from Latin missa.

Christmas Date and its Significance:
There is no evidence of Jesus' birthday in the New Testament as on 25th of December. Neither His disciples used to celebrate this day during the early days as it was considered a day for Pagan religion and worship. As per several scholars He was born somewhere around the spring time probably in the month of September though His date or year of birth is still unclear. Pope Julius I declared December 25th as the advent of Jesus Christ to coincide with the Pagan celebration of Winter Solstice. The purpose was to replace the age old concept with a Christian belief that can receive popularity among the masses.
